The five-storey historical building, located on Beyoğlu Balo Street, next to Doğançay Museum, opposite the Akademililer Art Center, will be operating as an art gallery as of May 17th.
Built by the architect Victor Adaman (1880 – 1946 Istanbul) in the 1900’s, the building was also the place where the architect, who graduated from the Paris Academy of Fine Arts, lived for a period. Some of the works that Victor Adaman undertook architectural application and construction works are; There are important buildings such as Istanbul Governor’s Mansion Building, Melek and İpek Cinemas, Üsküdar Şemsipaşa Tobacco Warehouse, Edirne Train Station, Yeşilköy Airport. The building, which belongs to the owner of ART Suites Hotels, Businessman Seyfi Kaya, will continue as an art gallery of the same group as a result of the restoration for about two years. A branch of ART Suites Gallery will open at the end of next June within the ART Suites Hotel in Bodrum Yalıkavak and the Gallery will continue to work in Bodrum during the summer months. Seyfi Kaya emphasizes that they plan to make ART Suites Hotels and Galleries an art center, and to transform their hotels into art hotels in parallel with the galleries they have established in Bodrum and Istanbul.
The representation of the facts about the city is made visible by art and It is among the dominant issues that it creates an awareness. In the history of art, this is witnessed in a striking form of realist representations of city or urban views, to utopian city designs.
Undoubtedly, urban memory causes different images to crystallize in each individual due to different past experiences. Each city dweller lives or works in certain parts of the city, and this results in the emergence of different memories and hence meanings about it.
At this point, the exhibition titled “Abrasions on the Surface”, curated by Erkan Doğanay and the text of the exhibition written by Fırat Arapoğlu, aims to make visible the effects of city and city images with 11 artists belonging to different age, gender and cultural groups. The exhibition will take place with the works of Seçil Büyükkan, Zeynep Bingöl Çiftçi, Erkan Doğanay, Çağdaş Erçelik, Tina Fischer, Deniz Gökduman, İnsel İnal, Coşkun Sami, Fırat Uysal, Serkan Yüksel and Semih Zeki between 17 May – 17 June 2011 at ART Suites Can be viewed at Gallery.
